He lived in the village of Villalba in Sicily. Many people called him "Don Calò." He was born on July 24, 1877. The village was part of a poor area called the "Vallone." Most people there were farmers who grew their own food. Vizzini did not finish elementary school. However, he became a very powerful man in his region.

In his early years, Vizzini worked as a middleman.

He helped peasants move wheat to mills near the coast. This was a hard job because bandits often used the roads. Vizzini worked with a bandit named Francesco Paolo Varsallona to provide protection. In 1902, Vizzini and the bandit were both arrested. Vizzini was one of the few people found not guilty. Later, he used his connections to buy a large estate. He owned 290 hectares of land for himself.

World War I brought new ways for Vizzini to grow his wealth. The Italian Army needed many horses and mules for the war. Vizzini made deals with the Army Commission to manage these animals. He also made money on the black market. In 1917, he was sentenced to 20 years for fraud and murder. But his powerful friends helped him stay free. By 1922, he helped peasants take land from rich owners. He even helped start a cooperative for these farmers.

During World War II, Vizzini played a big role in history.

In 1943, the American army invaded Sicily. Vizzini allegedly helped the US troops during this invasion. He helped the soldiers navigate the difficult mountain paths. This helped the troops move through the area safely. Because of this, he became a symbol of power after the war. He helped bring back the Mafia during the Allied occupation.

People had many different views of Calogero Vizzini. Some saw him as a dangerous criminal who used violence. His police files listed many crimes like robbery and extortion. Others saw him as a "man of honour" who helped the poor. When he died on July 10, 1954, thousands of people attended his funeral.
