He was born on July 24, 1877, in Villalba. This village sat in a poor region called the "Vallone." Most residents practiced subsistence agriculture to survive. Vizzini became a legendary figure in the province of Caltanissetta. He is often described as the archetype of a rural Mafia leader. Some media even called him the "boss of bosses." However, the Cosa Nostra structure is actually quite loose.

This lack of a single leader is a key part of how the organization works.

Vizzini's career progressed through two very different stages. In his early years, he used violence to gain power. He used intimidation and murder to establish his position. During his second stage, he changed his methods significantly. He limited his use of violence and sought legal income. He began to exercise his power in a more open manner. This shift allowed him to act as a social intermediary. Some people saw him as a provider of order and peace. He became a powerful figure who could influence local politics.

His early business involved acting as a "cancia." A cancia was a middleman for local peasants. These farmers needed to move wheat to coastal mills. The roads were dangerous due to frequent bandit activity. Vizzini arranged protection through a bandit named Francesco Paolo Varsallona. This partnership helped secure the transport of grain. In 1902, Vizzini and Varsallona were arrested for criminal association. Vizzini was one of the few individuals acquitted in court. Later, he used family connections to acquire large estates. He brokered a deal for the Belici estate in 1908. He kept 290 hectares for himself and helped local peasants.

World War I provided new ways for Vizzini to build wealth. The Italian Army needed many horses and mules for cavalry. Vizzini made agreements with the Army Commission to manage these animals. He collected a poll tax from owners who wanted to avoid requisition. He also profited from the black market during the war. In 1917, he was sentenced to 20 years for fraud and murder. However, powerful friends helped him avoid serving this sentence. He later expanded his influence into the sulphur mining industry. He even attended high-level meetings in Rome and London. He met with important figures like Finance Minister Guido Jung.

In 1922, Vizzini led peasants in seizing land from aristocrats. He bought three estates in the Villalba region. He divided the land and gave it to a cooperative. Some reports say he did this without taking any money. However, other accounts claim he kept over 12,000 acres for himself.

Vizzini preferred to stay in the background of politics. He advised voters and elected officials instead of running for office. He even supported Benito Mussolini during the March on Rome. This support helped him maintain his status during the Fascist era. Mussolini eventually sent Cesare Mori to suppress the Mafia. Vizzini was confined to Basilicata but later returned to Villalba.

During the 1943 invasion of Sicily, Vizzini played a major role.

He allegedly assisted the Allied Forces during Operation Husky. The U.S. Office of Strategic Services used Mafia contacts for help. Vizzini reportedly helped American troops navigate difficult mountain terrain. He also helped protect roads from enemy snipers. This cooperation helped the Americans move through western Sicily. Because of this, he became a symbol of the Mafia's return. He helped restore Cosa Nostra during the Allied occupation. He later shifted his political support to the Christian Democrat party.

Historians view Vizzini's legacy with great complexity. His criminal dossier included 39 murders and 63 extortions.

Despite this, his funeral in 1954 was a massive event. Thousands of peasants dressed in black attended the service. The funeral epitaph claimed his Mafia stood for respect and law. It even described his influence as "love." Modern historians suggest his mythical status may have been exaggerated. They argue his magnitude was not as large as legends suggest. He remains a central figure in studying Sicilian social history.
