A Bunsen burner is a special tool used in science labs.

It creates a single open gas flame. Scientists use this flame for heating things. They also use it for sterilization, which means cleaning tools. It can also be used for combustion. This tool is very important for many kinds of science work.

To make a flame, gas flows through a metal tube.

The gas might be natural gas or propane. It enters through a small hole at the bottom. Air enters through open slots at the base of the tube. This happens because of the Venturi effect. The air and gas mix together inside the barrel. Then, the mixture burns at the top once a spark hits it. You can change the flame by adjusting the air slots.

Robert Bunsen helped create this design in Germany.

In 1852, the University of Heidelberg hired him. He wanted a better way to heat things in his lab. He worked with a mechanic named Peter Desaga. Desaga built the first models in late 1854. By 1855, Desaga had made 50 burners for students. Bunsen shared his design with other scientists two years later. Now, these burners are used in labs all over the world.

There are different ways the flame can look. A blue flame is very hot and clean. This happens when you let in plenty of air. A yellow flame is much cooler. This is called a luminous flame. It is bright because of tiny soot particles. However, this yellow flame can leave black carbon on things. You can also use different types of burners. The Meker burner can reach 1,200 °C. The Tirrill burner can reach even higher at 1,560 °C.

Using a Bunsen burner is a bit like using a stove. You might use a tripod to hold a beaker over the heat.

It is smart to use a heatproof mat. This protects the lab bench from getting too hot. In biology labs, the burner also helps keep things clean. The heat creates an updraft. This moves tiny bits of dust away from the work area. This keeps the science experiments very safe and clean.
