It makes a single open flame. Scientists use it to heat things. They also use it to clean tools. This process is called sterilization.

The burner uses gas to work. This gas can be natural gas or propane. The gas flows through a tube.

Small slots at the bottom let air in. This mixing of air and gas is very important.

You can change how the flame looks. If you let in more air, the flame turns blue. A blue flame is very hot. It is also clean and leaves no soot. If you close the air slots, the flame turns yellow. We call this a luminous flame.

This yellow flame is cooler. It is bright, but it can leave black carbon on things.

To use it, scientists often place the burner under a tripod. A tripod is a three-legged stand. It holds a beaker or a jar over the heat. You should always use a heatproof mat. This keeps the lab bench safe from the heat.
