First, a group called the Archaeanactidae ruled from 480 to 438 BC. Then, a new family called the Spartocids took over. They were very successful leaders. They traded grain with the city of Athens. In return, Athens gave them silver and special rights. The Spartocid kings were often seen as wise and enlightened. They even used different titles for different people they ruled.

History shows that the kingdom changed many times.

This happened from AD 63 to AD 68. After that, it became a Roman client kingdom. This means Rome protected them. It became the longest-lasting client kingdom in Roman history. A king named Aspurgus ruled from 8 BC to AD 38.
