The Bofors scandal was a major political event involving India and Sweden. It centered on a massive deal to sell weapons. A Swedish company called Bofors AB wanted to sell howitzers to India. These are large guns used by an army in the field. The deal was worth about $1.4 billion. It involved selling 410 of these 155 mm howitzers. This was the biggest arms deal Sweden had ever seen.

This story is about how rules were broken to win a contract. Instead of following fair paths, some people used secret payments. These payments are called kickbacks. They are used to influence leaders to make certain choices. The investigation showed that money meant for development projects was diverted. This was done to secure the contract at any cost. It was a very large and complicated way of doing business. The scandal showed how corruption can affect how countries work together.

In the early 1980s, India began looking for new howitzers. They wanted them because of reports about what other countries were doing. In 1981, four different types of guns were tested in trials. By 1985, only two remained in the competition. On March 24, 1986, the Indian government signed the contract with Bofors. This was meant to supply the Indian army with much needed equipment.

Everything changed on April 16, 1987. A Swedish radio station shared a story from a whistleblower. This person worked for the Swedish police. The story said Bofors paid kickbacks to people in Sweden and India. A journalist named Chitra Subramaniam helped find the truth. She was in Sweden and found over 350 important documents. These papers showed how the payoffs worked.

The scandal had huge effects on the world of politics. It helped lead to the defeat of Rajiv Gandhi's party in 1989. Many years later, the Bofors guns were used in the Kargil War. Even though there was a scandal, the guns worked well in battle. The legal case lasted for many decades in different courts. It involved many people, including an Italian businessman named Ottavio Quattrocchi. This story shows how one big deal can change history for a long time.
