It took place from May to July 1999. The fighting happened in the Kargil district of Ladakh. This region is part of the disputed area of Jammu and Kashmir. Most of the combat occurred along the Line of Control. This line acts as the border between the two countries.

The war was a very serious event for both nations. It was one of only two times nuclear-armed states fought a conventional war.

The conflict began when Pakistani troops entered Indian territory.

They moved into strategic positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control. These troops were sometimes disguised as Kashmiri militants. This movement was known as Operation Badr. The goal was to cut the link between Kashmir and Ladakh. They also wanted to force Indian forces to leave the Siachen Glacier. By taking these high spots, they hoped to change how the two countries negotiated.

Fighting in these mountains is a very hard job. The area has a continental climate with very cold winters. Temperatures often drop far below freezing.

Most of the military outposts were at very high altitudes. Some peaks were as high as 18,000 feet. The thin air makes it hard for aircraft to carry heavy loads. High ground acts like a fortress for anyone holding it. In these mountains, attackers often need six troops for every one defender. This made the fighting much harder than usual.

India responded with a large military mission called Operation Vijay.

The Indian Army worked to take back the occupied positions. The Indian Air Force also helped through Operation Safed Sagar.

At first, India thought only a few militants had entered. By May 21, they realized the scale was much larger. Indian leaders like Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee managed the diplomacy. Eventually, Indian forces recaptured most of the positions. Facing international pressure, Pakistani forces withdrew from the remaining spots.

Today, people remember this time through special sites.

Even though the nations had signed the Lahore Declaration in February 1999, the conflict still broke out. The history of this region remains a very important part of how India and Pakistan interact today.
