*The Satanic Verses* is a famous novel by the Indian-British writer Salman Rushdie.

It was first published in September 1988. The book uses a style called magical realism. This means that magic and real life mix together in the story. The book explores big ideas like identity and the feeling of being an immigrant. Many people find it very important because it looks at how people change when they move to new lands. It was a finalist for the Booker Prize in 1988. It also won the Whitbread Award for novel of the year.

The story follows two actors named Gibreel Farishta and Saladin Chamcha. They are from an Indian Muslim background. At the start, they are on a plane flying from India to Britain. The plane is hijacked and then explodes over the English Channel. While the other passengers die, the two men are magically saved. They undergo strange changes to their bodies. Farishta begins to act like the archangel Gabriel. Chamcha turns into a devil with horns and goat-like legs. The characters must struggle to rebuild their lives in England.

Inside the book, there are also several dream sequences. These are stories that happen inside the mind of Farishta. One sequence tells a fictional story about the life of the prophet Muhammad in Mecca. This part includes the episode of the "Satanic Verses." The title comes from this part of the story. The verses involve three pagan goddesses named Allāt, Al-Uzza, and Manāt. These accounts were based on the work of historians like al-Waqidi and al-Tabari. Another dream tells of a girl named Ayesha who leads a pilgrimage.

The book caused a lot of anger around the world. Some people felt the story was blasphemy, which means it was disrespectful to their religion. In 1989, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa. A fatwa is a formal religious ruling. This ruling called for the death of Rushdie and his publishers. Because of this, the UK government gave Rushdie police protection. There were many attacks on the author and people connected to him. In 1991, a translator named Hitoshi Igarashi was stabbed to death. In August 2022, Rushdie was attacked again and lost sight in one eye.

Even with the controversy, many experts still study this book. The critic Harold Bloom called it Rushdie's largest achievement. Other writers say the book is about the difficulty of living between two different cultures. It shows the struggle of being a migrant in a place like London. The book uses many different influences from other famous writers. These include authors like James Joyce and Franz Kafka. It remains a very important work in modern literature today.
