The story uses magical realism. This means magic and real life mix together. The book follows two actors from India. They move to England after a plane crash. One character changes to look like an angel. The other character looks like a devil. The story also has dream parts. These dreams tell stories about the prophet Muhammad. One dream part is about the "Satanic Verses." These are verses about three goddesses.

Many people were very angry about the book. They felt it was blasphemy, or disrespectful to their faith. This led to riots and violence in many places. In 1989, a leader in Iran issued a fatwa. A fatwa is a formal ruling. This ruling called for Rushdie to be killed. Because of this, the writer lived with police protection. He faced many attacks on his life. In 2022, he was attacked again. He lost sight in one eye and use of one hand. Many people still study this book today. They talk about what it means to move to a new land.
