A Swedish company called Bofors wanted to sell large guns to India. These guns are called howitzers. In 1986, India signed a deal to buy 410 of them. This was a very large deal worth $1.4 billion.

In 1987, a radio station in Sweden told a big story. They said Bofors paid secret money to leaders. This money is often called a kickback. These payments were made to help win the deal. Many people in India and Sweden were accused of taking this money. A journalist named Chitra Subramaniam found many documents about the payoffs.

The news caused big changes in India. Many people felt the leaders were not being fair. This helped a new group win the elections in 1989. The Bofors guns were still used later in the Kargil War. Even with the scandal, the guns worked well in battle. The case went through many courts for many years. It showed how important it is for leaders to follow the rules.
