The story starts in Milan during the 1970s. A man named Casaubon tells the tale. He meets two friends named Belbo and Diotallevi. They work at a publishing house. They start a game to pass the time. They use a computer named Abulafia to make a fake secret plan. They call this "The Plan." It uses old ideas about the Knights Templar. The friends try to link many different historical events together.

Soon, the three men become obsessed with their game. They start to wonder if the plan is actually true. This book is a satire. A satire is a story that uses humor to show mistakes. Eco shows how dangerous it is to believe in every conspiracy theory. The title comes from a real pendulum in Paris. This device shows how the Earth rotates.
