The word Dalit describes a group of people in the Indian subcontinent. Historically, these people were treated very unfairly by society. They were often called "untouchables" because they were left out of the main social groups. In the Hindu caste system, there are four main groups called Varnas. Dalits were not part of these four groups. Instead, some people saw them as a fifth group called Panchama.

The word Dalit comes from a Sanskrit word. It means something that is split, broken, or scattered. This name was used to show how these people were treated by others. In the late 1880s, a man named Jyotirao Phule used this word. He wanted to describe the people who were being oppressed. Later, a famous leader named B. R. Ambedkar used the term too. He wanted to include all people who were treated poorly, no matter their specific caste.

Many leaders worked hard to change things for Dalits. One early leader was Gopal Baba Walangkar. He lived around the year 1840 and wanted a fair society. Another man named Harichand Thakur worked with the Namasudra community. In 1932, a very important meeting called the Poona Pact took place. This was an agreement between B. R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. This meeting helped shape how the government would treat Dalits in the future.

India made new rules to help Dalits after it became independent in 1947. The Constitution of India in 1950 made it illegal to treat people as untouchables. It also started a system called "reservation." This system sets aside spots in schools and government jobs for Dalits. This is meant to help them have a better life. In 1997, K. R. Narayanan became the first Dalit President of India. This showed that Dalits could reach the highest offices in the land.

Today, many Dalits live in India and Nepal. There are also Dalits in countries like the United Kingdom and the United States. In India, Dalits make up about 16.6 percent of the people. Some states, like Punjab, have many more Dalits than others. Even though there are laws to protect them, some people still face hard times in small villages. Many groups still work every day to make sure everyone is treated with respect and fairness.
