Different names are used to describe these communities in different ways. In India, the government uses the legal term "Scheduled Tribes."

Some people in Northeast India prefer the word "Indigenous." The term Adivasi is a social and political name. It is different from the word "tribe," which describes a social unit.

History shows how these names were chosen by leaders. In the 1930s, tribal activists first used the word Adivasi. They wanted a way to show they were the original people.

Later, a leader named Jaipal Singh Munda used the term. He wanted "Adivasi" to be the official name in the government. However, B.R. Ambedkar chose "Scheduled Tribe" for the Indian Constitution. He wanted a very precise legal definition for the courts. This ensured that these groups could receive specific protections.

Many Adivasi groups live in a large area called the tribal belt. This belt stretches from Gujarat in the west to West Bengal in the east.

In the west, groups like the Bhils live in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The central region is home to the Gonds and Khonds.

These communities have many different ways of life and beliefs. Many Adivasi people follow Animism, which is a religion based on nature.
