Bilingual education means students learn in two or more languages. They do not just study a language as a subject. Instead, they use both languages to learn math, science, and history.

There are different ways to do this. Some programs help kids keep both languages for a long time. This is called maintenance education. One way is a dual language program. In these classes, kids who speak different languages learn together. Some use a 90/10 model. This means most teaching is in a native language at first. Later, the split becomes even. Other programs are called transitional. These help kids learn a new language quickly. Once they know it well, they use only that language.

Some students use signs to talk and write. This is called bimodal bilingualism. It helps students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Learning two languages has many benefits. It can help kids get more jobs later. It also helps them talk to many people. Some programs even help save languages that are dying out.
