Most of these schools are private. They often have students from many different countries. These students might move often because of their parents' jobs. Their parents might be diplomats or business workers. This can make students feel like they have no single home. Some people call these students "third culture kids."

Teachers also come from many places. They often move to teach in a new country. Many schools use a special set of lessons called a curriculum. Some use lessons from the United Kingdom or the United States. Others use the International Baccalaureate. This is a program that helps students become global citizens.

In 1924, the first school was started in Geneva. It focused on two languages, English and French. Since then, these schools have grown a lot. In 2011, there were 7,655 registered schools. By July 2021, that number rose to 12,373 schools. Many new schools are opening in Asia and the Middle East. These schools help people understand different cultures.
