People often call it the "Bird's Nest" because of its unique look. It is located at the Olympic Green in the Chaoyang district of Beijing. This massive building was designed for the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It also served as a venue for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The stadium is a very important public space for the city.

The stadium works by using two separate structures that stand 50 feet apart. Inside, there is a red concrete bowl where people sit to watch events. Around this bowl is a huge outer frame made of steel beams.

These beams were designed to look random, like twigs in a nest. This look was actually meant to hide the supports for a retractable roof. The team also added special pipes under the grass field. These pipes collect heat in the winter and help cool things in the summer. A rainwater collector even helps clean and reuse water around the site.

Architects from a Swiss firm called Herzog & de Meuron designed the stadium. They won the design contest in April 2003 after looking at 13 different ideas.

The team studied Chinese ceramics to find inspiration for the shape. A Chinese architect named Li Xinggang also helped lead the project. He believed the nest design was a wonderful idea for China. In China, bird's nests are seen as something very special and expensive. The artist Ai Weiwei also served as an artistic consultant during the project.

Building the stadium was a huge job that took many years. Construction began in December 2003 and finished in June 2008.

At its busiest, 17,000 workers were building the stadium at once. They used 121,000 tons of steel, and all of it was made in China. The stadium can hold 80,000 people in its permanent seats. The grass field is very large, covering 7,811 square meters. This field was actually laid down in just 24 hours in May 2008.

Today, the Bird's Nest is used for many different kinds of fun. People go there to watch football matches and big racing events. It has even hosted the League of Legends World Championship finals.
