Battleship is a fun strategy game for two players.

Players use grids to play. Each player has a fleet of ships. You must hide your ships on your grid. Your opponent cannot see where they are. This makes the game a guessing game. You want to find and sink the other person's ships.

On each turn, you call out a spot to shoot. Your opponent tells you if you hit something. If you hit a ship, you mark it. You can use red pegs in some versions. You can also use a pencil on paper.

In many versions, there are five types of ships. These include the Carrier and the Battleship. There are also Cruisers, Submarines, and Destroyers. Some newer sets add a Patrol Boat. The game has a long history. People played a version with paper and pencils during World War I. In 1967, Milton Bradley released a plastic board game. You can even play it on computers or phones today. In 2025, it joined the National Toy Hall of Fame.
