Bartholomew Gosnold was a very important explorer from England.

He was born in 1571 in a place called Suffolk. His family lived at a home called Otley Hall. Gosnold studied law at a school called the Middle Temple. He was also a lawyer and a privateer. A privateer is someone who works on ships for profit. He was a key leader for English settlements in America. Many people call him the main person who started the Virginia colony.

In 1602, Gosnold led a trip to New England. He sailed from Cornwall on a small ship named the Concord. He had thirty-two people on his crew. One of these men was his friend John Brereton. They sailed a new path from the Azores to the coast. They arrived at Cape Elizabeth in Maine in May 1602. Gosnold wanted to build a small fishing camp there. He planned for twenty men to stay through the winter. This was a very big job for a small crew.

The crew explored many new places along the coast. They found a place with many fish and named it Cape Cod. Gosnold also found an island covered in wild grapes. He named it Martha's Vineyard after his daughter, Martha. The crew then went to Cuttyhunk Island. They called this place Elizabeth Island. They even built a small boat to reach a lake. They tried to build a fort to stay there. They also traded furs and metal with the Native people.

Things did not stay peaceful for very long. By June 1602, the relations between the groups became strained. Two English men were hurt by arrows during a hunt. The settlers also worried about having enough food for winter. Because of these hard problems, they decided to leave. The crew sailed back to England on June 17. Later, Gosnold worked to start the Virginia Company. He helped get a charter from King James I. This group wanted to settle in a place called Virginia.

Gosnold helped gather people for the new Virginia trip. He brought his brother Anthony and a cousin along. He was the captain of a ship called the Godspeed. He arrived at Jamestown in 1607. Gosnold helped design the fort for the new colony. He thought the island location was not very healthy. Sadly, he died on August 22, 1607. He died only four months after arriving. A stone cross may mark his grave today. His work helped change the history of the land.
