Plymouth Colony

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Plymouth Colony was a very important settlement in early America. It was the first permanent English colony in the New England area. People often call the settlers who lived there the Pilgrims. They wanted to live according to their own religious beliefs. This group was also known as the Brownist Emigration. The colony was founded in the year 1620. It eventually became the town of Plymouth in Massachusetts.

Setting up the colony was a long and difficult process. First, the group had to find ways to pay for their trip. A group of businessmen called the Merchant Adventurers gave them money. The settlers then bought food and supplies for the journey. They planned to use two ships named the Mayflower and the Speedwell. However, the Speedwell had many leaks and could not finish the trip. This meant the passengers had to crowd onto the Mayflower. The long delays and the crowded ship made the trip very hard.

The story of the Pilgrims began in a village called Scrooby. This village was in Nottinghamshire, England. The people there were part of a group called the Brownists. They faced many hard times because of their religious views. In 1607, leaders raided their homes and put members in prison. The group left England in 1608 to live in the Netherlands. They lived in cities like Amsterdam and Leiden for a while. Even there, they felt pressure from the English government.

In late 1620, the travelers finally reached the coast of America. They saw land near Cape Cod on November 9. Because they did not have a clear plan, they signed a document. This document was called the Mayflower Compact. It was a set of rules that 41 men signed. These rules helped the colony stay organized and fair. The settlers eventually landed at Plymouth, which had been surveyed by Captain John Smith.

Life in the new land required help from others. The settlers made a treaty with a Wampanoag leader named Massasoit. This agreement helped the colony stay successful. A man named Squanto from the Patuxet tribe also helped them. The colony grew to cover much of southeastern Massachusetts. In 1691, Plymouth merged with the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Today, many people remember Plymouth through stories of Thanksgiving and Plymouth Rock.
