Bamboo is a very special group of plants. Most bamboos are evergreen, meaning they stay green all year. They belong to the grass family called Poaceae.

While they look like trees, they are actually part of the grass family. Some bamboos are tiny, like Raddiella vanessiae in French Guiana. Other bamboos are huge. The Dendrocalamus sinicus can have stalks that reach 30 meters long.

These giant stalks can be very thick and heavy. Bamboo is very important for people in many parts of the world.

Bamboo grows in a very interesting way. It uses a system of underground stems called rhizomes. Some bamboo grows in clumps that stay in one place. Other types are "running" bamboo. Running bamboo spreads wide by sending rhizomes underground.

These underground paths can grow several meters in a single year. This allows bamboo to be one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth. Some species, like Japanese giant timber bamboo, can grow up to 91 centimeters in just 24 hours. This means they can grow almost an inch every 90 seconds!

Each bamboo stalk is called a culm. Unlike a tree, a culm reaches its full height in just one season. This takes about three to four months. During this time, the shoot grows straight up without any branches.

After it reaches full height, branches grow from the nodes. In the next few years, the walls of the culm slowly harden. By the third year, the stalk is fully mature. Eventually, fungus will grow on the outside and cause the culm to decay. This makes bamboo a great resource for harvesting.

People have used bamboo for a long time in many ways. It is a natural composite material. This means it is very strong for its weight.

In Bangladesh and India, the Bambusa tulda species is very strong. It can have a tensile strength of 60,000 psi. Some species are also very hard. Bambusa tabacaria from China contains enough silica to make sparks when hit with an axe. People use bamboo for building, as food, and for beautiful art. It is even used to make tea in some places.

Bamboo grows in many different climates around the world. Most of it lives in warm, moist tropical areas. You can find it in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

It also grows in parts of Africa and the Americas. Some hardy species can even survive cold temperatures as low as -20°C. In the United States, three species of Arundinaria are native. In the past, large areas of the Southeastern United States were covered in bamboo thickets. These are now very rare and endangered. Bamboo remains a vital part of many ecosystems and human cultures.
