Bamboo is a diverse group of mostly evergreen perennial flowering plants. These plants belong to the subfamily Bambusoideae within the grass family, Poaceae.

While they often look like trees, they are actually specialized grasses. This group includes some of the largest members of the grass family. For example, the species Dendrocalamus sinicus has individual stalks, or culms, that reach 30 meters in length. These culms can be very thick and heavy. In contrast, the tiny Raddiella vanessiae only grows a few inches tall.

The structure of a bamboo culm is very different from a tree. In most trees, growth happens through a layer called a cambium. This layer creates wood and bark. Bamboos lack this woody xylem. Instead, their vascular bundles are scattered throughout the walls of the stalk. Because they lack secondary growth wood, bamboo stems are columnar. They do not taper like many other plants. Most bamboo internodes, the spaces between the joints, are hollow. Some species have incredibly long internodes. Kinabaluchloa wrayi has internodes up to 1 meter long. Arthrostylidium schomburgkii has even longer ones, exceeded only by papyrus.

Bamboo is famous for being among the fastest-growing plants on Earth. This rapid growth is driven by a unique rhizome-dependent system. Rhizomes are underground stems that allow the plant to spread. There are two main growth patterns: clumping and running. Clumping species have short rhizomes that expand the root mass slowly. Running species have long rhizomes that spread widely underground.

Running bamboo can be very aggressive. It can send out runners several meters in a single year. This speed is impressive. Japanese giant timber bamboo can grow 91 centimeters in just 24 hours. This means it grows almost an inch every 90 seconds. This fast growth makes bamboo useful for carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation.

Each bamboo culm follows a specific life cycle. Unlike trees, a culm reaches its full height in a single growing season. This process takes only three to four months. During this time, the shoot grows vertically without any branches. Once it reaches its mature height, branches extend from the nodes. The next year, the pulpy walls of the culm begin to harden. By the third year, the culm is fully mature. Eventually, fungus begins to grow on the outside of the stalk. Over five to eight years, this fungus causes the culm to decay. Because of this, culms are best harvested for construction within three to seven years.

Bamboos are highly valued as a natural composite material. They have a high strength-to-weight ratio, which is similar to timber. This makes them excellent for building structures. Some species are remarkably strong. Bambusa tulda, found in Bangladesh and India, has a tensile strength of 60,000 psi. Other species are extremely hard. Bambusa tabacaria from China contains high amounts of silica. This makes the material so hard that it can create sparks when struck by an axe.

Bamboos grow in many different environments worldwide. Most species prefer warm, moist tropical or temperate climates. They are common in the Asia-Pacific region, including China, Japan, and Australia.

They also grow in parts of Africa and the Americas. In the Americas, they range from southern Argentina to Ecuador. In the United States, only three species of Arundinaria are native. These once formed large ecosystems called canebrakes in the Southeast. Today, these canebrake ecosystems are considered critically endangered. Some hardy species can even survive temperatures as low as -20°C.

Scientists use molecular research to study bamboo taxonomy. This involves looking at DNA to understand how species are related. Bamboos are divided into many tribes and genera. There are more than 1,400 species across 115 genera. Researchers study the chloroplast DNA to trace maternal lines of descent. The nuclear genome is more complex due to ancient hybridization events. This leads to allopolyploidy, where plants have multiple sets of chromosomes. For example, herbaceous bamboos are diploid, while some woody bamboos are hexaploid. This complex genetic history helps explain why bamboo is such a successful and diverse group of plants.
