Axiidea are small sea animals. People often call them mud shrimp. They are part of a group called decapods. This group includes crabs and lobsters.

These shrimp live in soft sand or mud. They dig complex burrows in the ocean floor. Some burrows look like the letter Y or U. Other burrows have many branching tunnels. These homes help the ocean floor stay healthy.

Axiidea can be many colors. They can be white, pink, or red. They can also be orange or dark brown. Some have hard shells. Others have thin shells to help them burrow.

How they eat changes their homes. Some eat bits of dead matter. We call these detritophages. These shrimp build new tunnels as they eat. Others catch food that drifts in the water. These are called drift catchers. They make deep burrows with seagrass inside. Other shrimp are suspension feeders. They catch food floating in the water.

You can find them in most oceans. They like warm water. They do not live in cold polar seas. Most live in shallow water near the coast.
