Sea hares are large animals that live in the ocean.

They are called sea hares because of how they look. They have two long parts on their heads. These parts are called rhinophores. They look like the ears of a hare. These rhinophores help the animal smell. They are very good at finding scents in the water.

Sea hares mostly eat seaweed. Their color often matches the seaweed they eat. This helps them hide from enemies. If a predator finds them, the sea hare can defend itself. It lets out a cloud of ink from its ink glands. This ink can be red, white, or purple. The ink can even block the sense of smell in a predator. Some sea hares also make a clear slime. This slime can plug the nose of a lobster.

These animals move in many ways. Some use a way called turbo jet propulsion to move. Others use parts of their body called parapodia. These parts look like jelly-like wings. They flutter to help the animal swim.

Sea hares are also used by scientists. One kind has very large axons. These are parts of the body used for signals. Scientists study them to learn about memory.
