It sits in the Fall Line region of the state. The Fall Line is the area where hills meet flatter land. The city lies directly across the Savannah River from North Augusta, South Carolina. This river is a navigable waterway at this location. This means boats can travel up the river to reach the city. Augusta is the third most populous city in Georgia. In 2020, the population was 202,081 people. The larger Augusta metropolitan area has 611,000 residents. This makes it the second-largest metro area in Georgia.

The geography of the area is defined by water and movement. The Savannah River marks the boundary between Georgia and South Carolina. Near Augusta, the Clarks Hill Dam creates Clarks Hill Lake. Further downstream, the Stevens Creek Dam generates hydroelectric power. The Augusta Diversion Dam marks the start of the Augusta Canal. This canal channels water from the Savannah River into the city.

Augusta has a long and complex history. It was established in 1736 by James Oglethorpe. He sent troops to explore the upper Savannah River in 1735. A leader named Noble Jones built a fort there in 1736. This settlement served as a defense against potential invasions. Oglethorpe named the town for Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. She was the wife of Frederick, Prince of Wales. The city served as the second state capital of Georgia from 1785 to 1795.

Economic changes shaped the city over many centuries. In the 1800s, the invention of the cotton gin helped the area grow. The region became a market town for cotton cultivation. This growth relied on slave labor and the domestic slave trade. During the American Civil War, Augusta became a center for war industries. It housed the principal Confederate Powderworks. After the war, a textile industry grew along the Augusta Canal. Large mills like Sibley Mill and King Mill were built during this time.

The climate in Augusta is humid subtropical. This means the summers are very hot and humid. The winters are generally short and mild.
