Nature and water play a big part in how the city works. The Savannah River is a navigable waterway here. This means boats can travel up the river to reach Augusta. Near the city, the Clarks Hill Dam forms a large lake. Further down the river, the Augusta Diversion Dam starts the Augusta Canal. This canal carries water from the river into the city. The Stevens Creek Dam also sits nearby to make electricity. These water features help the land and the people.

Augusta has a very long history that began in 1736. James Oglethorpe helped to start the settlement. He sent troops to explore the river in 1735. A leader named Noble Jones built a fort there the next year. This fort was meant to protect the coast from invaders. Oglethorpe named the town after Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. She was the mother of King George III. The city was even the second capital of Georgia from 1785 to 1795.
