Houston is located in Southeast Texas. It sits near Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The city serves as the seat of Harris County. It also acts as a southeastern anchor for the Texas Triangle megaregion.

The city is the ninth largest in the country by area. It is the largest city whose municipal government is not consolidated with a county or borough. While most of Houston is in Harris County, it also extends into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

The city's geography is defined by its relationship with water. It sits at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou. This location helped the city become a major center for trade and transportation. The city's layout includes many distinct areas, such as its superneighborhoods.

Before settlers arrived, the land was home to indigenous peoples. The Karankawa and Atakapa lived here for at least 2,000 years. These groups eventually became almost nonexistent due to foreign disease and competition. In 1836, land investors founded the city. Augustus Chapman and John Kirby Allen explored the site. They bought land from Elizabeth E. Parrott for $5,000. Most of this was paid in notes rather than cash.

The town was named after Sam Houston. He was a general and the president of the Republic of Texas. The city was officially incorporated on June 5, 1837. James S. Holman served as the first mayor.

Several major events fueled the rapid growth of Houston in the 20th century. A devastating hurricane struck Galveston in 1900. This event accelerated efforts to make Houston a deep-water port. In 1901, oil was discovered at the Spindletop field near Beaumont. This discovery sparked the Texas petroleum industry. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt approved $1 million for the Houston Ship Channel.

By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson opened the deep-water Port of Houston. This port is very important for global trade. It ranks first in the U.S. for international waterborne tonnage. It ranks second in total cargo tonnage handled.

World War II brought new industrial shifts to the region. Petrochemical refineries were built along the ship channel. These plants produced petroleum and synthetic rubber for the defense industry. The Brown Shipbuilding Company was founded in 1942 to build ships for the Navy. This created many new jobs for both Black and White workers. In 1950, the availability of air conditioning helped the economy. Many companies moved to Houston because of lower wages and cooler indoor environments. This led to a massive shift toward the energy sector. Major companies like ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips have headquarters in the area.

Houston is also a global leader in science and medicine. In 1945, the M.D. Anderson Foundation formed the Texas Medical Center. Today, it is the largest medical complex in the world. It employs more than 120,000 people.
