This metro area ranks as the 24th largest in the nation. Geographically, the city sits in the Texas Triangle. It is located near Austin along the I-35 corridor. Together, these cities form a massive metroplex of 5 million people.

The region's history began with the Payaya people. They lived near the San Antonio River Valley. The Payaya called the area Yanaguana, meaning "refreshing waters."

Spanish explorers arrived at the river on June 13, 1691. This date was the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua. The explorers named the river and the area San Antonio in his honor. In 1718, a Spanish mission and a colonial outpost were founded. This occurred because the Spanish wanted to prevent French expansion from La Louisiane. They also wanted to stop illegal trading with the Payaya people.

Settlement grew through organized colonial efforts. Father Antonio de Olivares helped build the Misión de San Antonio de Valero, known as The Alamo.

He also built the Presidio San Antonio de Bexar and a connecting bridge. In 1731, a group of families arrived to establish a civil government. These immigrants came from the Canary Islands, Galicia, or Havana. Led by Juan Leal Goraz, they formed the villa of San Fernando de Béxar. This was the first chartered civil settlement in present-day Texas. This community became the nucleus of the growing region.

The city's political identity changed many times over the centuries. San Antonio was originally part of the Spanish Empire. From 1821 to 1836, it belonged to the Mexican Republic. The United States annexed Texas in 1845 and it joined the Union in 1846.

During the Texas Revolution, conflict arose over the Mexican Constitution. In 1836, the Battle of the Alamo took place. A volunteer force defended the mission against Santa Anna's army. The defenders were defeated and killed. However, they became martyrs for the cause of Texas freedom. The phrase "Remember the Alamo" became a famous rallying cry.

San Antonio has experienced significant demographic shifts. By 1850, Tejanos were no longer the majority population. They did not regain majority status until 1968. Today, the city has the largest majority-Hispanic population in the U.S.

Approximately 64% of residents identify as Hispanic. The city also has a strong German heritage. In the early 1900s, about one-third of the population was ethnically German. Many descendants spoke Texas German, a dialect with a Texas twang. This cultural mix gives the city a unique character.

The modern economy is diverse and robust. San Antonio is a major military hub for the U.S. Armed Forces. It hosts Fort Sam Houston, Lackland, and Randolph Air Force Bases.
