Most major population centers are located in areas that were once prairies, grasslands, or forests.

Long before European arrival, many different Indigenous cultures inhabited the region. The territory sat between the Southwestern and the Plains cultural spheres. Three major groups reached their peak before contact: the Ancestral Puebloans, the Mississippian culture, and the civilizations of Mesoamerica. Within the current boundaries of Texas, many tribes lived in different environments. The Caddo people were agriculturalists who controlled the northeastern river basins.

Other groups included the Apache in the interior and the Karankawa along the central coast. The name "Texas" likely comes from a Caddo word meaning "friend."

The Spanish used this name to refer to the Caddo people themselves.

The history of Texas involves many shifts in political control. Spain was the first European country to claim the territory. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Texas became part of Mexico. However, tensions grew between Mexican authorities and settlers. This conflict led to the Texas Revolution and the famous Battle of the Alamo.

The economy of Texas has transformed through several distinct stages. Early economic drivers included bison, cattle, cotton, and timber. The cattle industry was especially vital and created the iconic image of the Texas cowboy.

In the late 19th century, cotton and lumber became more important as cattle became less lucrative.
