He was a playwright, a novelist, a poet, and even a painter. During his long career, he wrote more than 60 plays. He also wrote over 30 other works, including books about history and politics. Many people call him the "father" of modern Swedish literature. His book, The Red Room, written in 1879, is often called the first modern Swedish novel.

He loved to use his own life experiences to fuel his writing.

Strindberg was a bold experimenter who loved to try new ways of storytelling. He wrote plays that felt very real, which are called naturalistic dramas. In his play Miss Julie, he focused on the characters instead of just the plot.

He believed that a person's family history and their environment shaped who they were. Later in life, he tried even stranger things. His play A Dream Play, from 1902, did not follow normal rules for time or space. It used characters that could split or merge together. This helped start new art styles like expressionism and surrealism.

Strindberg's life began in Stockholm on January 22, 1849.

He was the third son of a shipping agent and a serving-maid. His childhood was not always easy or comfortable. He faced poverty and a very strict school in Klara. His mother passed away when he was only 13 years old. This loss stayed with him for a long time. He also had a complicated relationship with his father and his stepmother. These early years shaped the deep feelings in his later writing.

As a young man, Strindberg tried many different jobs to support himself. He worked as a pharmacy assistant and a schoolteacher. He even worked as an extra at the Royal Theatre in Stockholm.

In 1870, he joined a small club called the Rune Society. Members used special names from an ancient alphabet. Strindberg called himself Frö, which means "Seed." He also worked as an assistant librarian for eight years. Even though he did not have a university degree, he was accepted for the job. He eventually left the library in 1882.

Strindberg's work changed how people thought about the stage and the page. He moved away from old-fashioned ways of writing plays. He used everyday speech instead of fancy, formal verses.

This made his stories feel much more human and real. He even helped run a small theatre in Stockholm called the Intimate Theatre. His ideas about how characters act influenced many artists who came after him. Today, he is remembered as one of the most important writers in Swedish history.
