Strindberg often used his own life in his work. Some people call him the father of modern Swedish books. One book, The Red Room, was a very new kind of novel.

Strindberg liked to try new ways of telling stories. He wrote plays that felt very real. These are called naturalistic dramas. In his play Miss Julie, he focused on how people act.

He thought a person's life and surroundings shaped them. Later, he wrote dream-like plays. His play A Dream Play used strange ideas. It did not follow normal time or space. This helped start new styles of art. He also spent time studying science and the occult, which is the study of the unknown.
