He did not just want to paint what he saw with his eyes. Instead, he wanted to paint what he felt in his heart and mind. He called this special way of working "soul painting." This style helped him show deep feelings like love, jealousy, and fear. His work is very famous today because it feels so real to people.

To make his art, Munch used many different tools and methods. He was a master of printmaking, which is a way to create many copies of one image. He often used copper plates to make these prints. He used special techniques like etching, drypoint, and aquatint to mark the metal. He even began engraving directly onto the copper plates starting in 1894. He taught himself much of this difficult work without formal instruction. This skill allowed him to share his visions with many people.

His childhood was very hard because of sickness and loss. His mother and his favorite sister, Johanne Sophie, both died of tuberculosis. These sad events stayed with him for his whole life. His father was a doctor who was very religious and often nervous. This made the home feel heavy with fear and sorrow. These early years shaped the way he saw the world through his art.

Many important people and places influenced his growing talent. He studied at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania, which is now called Oslo. In Paris, he learned about using bright colors from artists like Vincent van Gogh. He also met the Swedish writer August Strindberg in Berlin. Munch began a famous series of paintings called "The Frieze of Life." This series explored many big themes about being human. One of his most famous works, "The Scream," was inspired by a sunset in Kristiania.
