Knut Hamsun was a famous Norwegian writer who changed how stories are told.

He was known for focusing on the deep parts of the human mind. Instead of just describing what people do, he wrote about how they think and feel. He used special ways of writing like interior monologue. This means the reader hears a character's inner thoughts directly. He also used stream of consciousness to show how thoughts flow. These new ideas made him a leader of the Neo-Romantic movement. His work was so important that he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920.

His writing style grew from his own life experiences. As a young man, he worked many different jobs. He was a shop assistant, a peddler, and even a shoemaker's apprentice. He also spent time traveling in America. These jobs helped him write his first book, *The Enigmatic Man*, in 1877. He often wrote about wanderers who moved through small rural towns. His stories often show a deep bond between people and nature. He wrote about the beautiful Norwegian woodlands and the coastline. Some of his most famous books include *Hunger*, *Pan*, and *Victoria*.

Hamsun's early years were quite difficult for him. He was born Knud Pedersen in the Gudbrandsdalen valley. When he was nine, he lived with his uncle, Hans Olsen. His uncle was not kind and used harsh treatment. Hamsun later said this caused him nervous difficulties later in life. He finally escaped back to his home in 1874. He spent the next five years working hard to earn money. At age 17, he began his journey as a writer. He even had a businessman named Erasmus Zahl help him financially.

During World War II, Hamsun made very controversial choices. He supported the German occupation of Norway. He met with high-ranking leaders, including Adolf Hitler. He also gave his Nobel Prize medal to Joseph Goebbels. Because of this, he was charged with treason after the war ended. He was 85 years old when he was detained by police in 1945. He was not sent to prison because of his advanced age. Instead, the court in Grimstad ordered him to pay a large fine. This fine was so big it left him ruined.

Even though his life was complicated, his influence remains huge. Many famous authors studied his work to learn new ways to write. These writers include Ernest Hemingway and Franz Kafka. People still visit the places where he lived. You can visit his homes in Hamarøy, Lom, and Grimstad. These houses are now museums for people to explore. A large center called the Knut Hamsun Centre also opened in 2009. His books are still translated into many different languages today. He died in 1952 at the age of 92.
