Hunger is a very famous novel by the Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun. It was first published in 1890 by P.G. Philipsens Forlag. Many people call this book the start of modern fiction. It explores how the human mind works in strange ways. The story is both interesting and sometimes funny. It shows how people think when they are under great stress.

The story follows an unnamed young man in his late twenties. He lives in the city of Kristiania, which is now called Oslo. He is very poor and has no food or warmth. He wanders the streets looking for something to eat. The man tries very hard to act like a respectable person. He even follows his own rules of being a gentleman. He gives clothes to children but refuses food from others.

Knut Hamsun wrote this book based on his own life. He had a hard time with money before he became famous. The story takes place in the late 19th century. Hamsun wanted to describe the small feelings inside a person. He called this the "whisper of the blood." He also wrote about how big cities can change people. This book was a big step for his career.

Many different people have translated this book into English. George Egerton first translated it in 1899. Later, Robert Bly published a translation in 1967. Sverre Lyngstad released a version in 1996 that many people like. A new translation came out in 2023 from Oxford World's Classics. The book has also been made into movies. There was a film in 1966 and another in 2001.

This novel is linked to many other great writers. Hamsun was influenced by the author Fyodor Dostoevsky. His work also shows ideas from Émile Zola. Famous American writers like Ernest Hemingway studied his style. Even Thomas Mann was a follower of Hamsun's way of writing. The book shows us how much one person's thoughts can matter. It remains a very important part of literature today.
