Aubrey de Grey is a scientist who studies how living things age. He is a biomedical gerontologist, which means he studies the biology of growing old.

De Grey believes that medical technology might one day stop people from dying due to age. He views aging as a collection of side effects from how our bodies work. These side effects eventually cause the body to break down. He thinks we can use science to fix these issues. His goal is to help people stay healthy for much longer.

One way he thinks we can help is through a plan called SENS. SENS stands for strategies for engineered negligible senescence. This is a way to prevent the body and mind from declining.

He also came up with an idea called xenocatabolism. This is a way to use tiny microbes to clean the body. He suggests we could use genes from microbes to break down bad things. These microbes could help get rid of waste that our bodies cannot clean on their own.

De Grey has had a very busy career in many different fields. He was born in London, England, on April 20, 1963. He studied computer science at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and graduated in 1985. At first, he worked with artificial intelligence and software. Later, he taught himself biology by reading many books and attending meetings. In 2000, Cambridge gave him a Ph.D. based on his work about mitochondria. Mitochondria are tiny parts inside cells that can get damaged over time.

He has worked on many big projects and written important books. In 1999, he wrote a book about how damage to mitochondria affects life. In 2007, he co-authored a book called Ending Aging. He also helped start the SENS Research Foundation in California in 2009. This group works on regenerative medicine to treat diseases of aging. He served as their Chief Science Officer for many years. In 2021, he left this role after an investigation into his conduct. The investigation found he had made offensive remarks to two women.

De Grey is also a very talented mathematician. He worked on a famous math puzzle called the Hadwiger–Nelson problem. This problem is about coloring shapes on a flat surface. He made the first progress on this puzzle in over 60 years. His work used a graph with 1,581 points, called vertices. Other researchers later found a way to do it with only 510 points. This shows how math and science can work together to solve hard problems.
