He is a gerontologist. This is a scientist who studies how living things grow old. He thinks we can use new tools to fix the body. He says aging is like a set of side effects from how our bodies work.

He helped start the SENS Research Foundation. This group works to find ways to treat diseases of aging. He also came up with an idea called xenocatabolism. This is a way to use tiny microbes to break down bad things in the body. He thinks we could use certain genes to help our bodies clean themselves.

De Grey also studies math. He worked on a hard math puzzle about shapes. This problem is called the Hadwiger–Nelson problem. He made the first progress on it in over 60 years. In 2021, he left his job at the SENS Foundation. An investigation found he had made offensive remarks to two women.
