He is a specialist in a field called topology. Topology is a way of studying shapes and how they change. He also studies geometry and mechanics. Fomenko has written many books for students. He has written 26 math textbooks and 180 scientific papers. In 1996, he won the State Prize of the Russian Federation. This was a big honor for his excellence in math. He is a member of many important science groups, like the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Fomenko does much more than just solve math problems. He is also a painter and an illustrator. His art is very special because it is inspired by math. He makes original drawings of topological objects and structures. These are shapes that come from his mathematical studies. He uses his art to show the beauty of math ideas. This makes his work different from many other math professors. He turns hard math concepts into visual art for others to see.

Fomenko's life has taken him to many places. He was born in 1945 in a place called Stalino. This place is now known as Donetsk. He grew up and went to school in Magadan. Later, his family moved to Luhansk in Eastern Ukraine. During his school years, he was very good at math. He won several medals in math competitions. In 1959, he even wrote a science fiction story. This story was called "The Mystery of the Milky Way."

He has spent many years studying at Moscow State University. He graduated from the Mechanics and Mathematics Department in 1967. In 1969, he began studying a topic called differential geometry. He worked hard to finish his big math projects. In 1970, he defended his first major thesis. In 1972, he defended his doctoral thesis. By 1981, he became a professor of Higher Geometry and Topology. In 1992, he became a head of a department at his university.

Fomenko is also known for his ideas about history. He created a concept called New Chronology. He uses math to try to change how we see the past. He claims that many historical dates are actually wrong. For example, he says the Trojan War and the Crusades were the same event. He also claims that Genghis Khan was actually Russian. Most scientists and historians do not agree with these ideas. They believe his historical work is not based on true science.
