Alexander Grothendieck was a brilliant mathematician. Many people call him the greatest mathematician of the twentieth century. He changed how we look at math. He helped create the modern field of algebraic geometry. This field uses math to study shapes and numbers. He also added new ideas like category theory and sheaf theory. These tools help mathematicians see how different ideas fit together.

Grothendieck had a very special way of thinking. He used a "relative" perspective to solve problems. This means he looked at how things relate to each other. Instead of just looking at one shape, he looked at how shapes change. This helped him find new paths in many areas of math. He was very fast at solving hard puzzles. In one city, experts gave him 14 difficult questions. He solved all of them in only a few months!

His life began in Berlin, Germany. His parents had very strong beliefs. During World War II, his family had to move to France. His parents were kept in internment camps. Alexander lived in a small village called Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. Local people helped hide him to keep him safe.

It was at a school in this village that he first loved math. His father was later sent to a camp and killed in 1942.

In 1966, he won the Fields Medal. This is a very famous prize for mathematicians. He also taught many students at the University of Montpellier.

In his later years, Grothendieck changed his focus. He was a pacifist, which means he was against war. He spoke out against wars in Vietnam and other places. He eventually left the math community to live a quiet life. In 1991, he moved to a small village called Lasserre. He lived there all by himself in the Pyrenees mountains. He spent his time thinking about math, religion, and philosophy. He lived there until he died in 2014.
