*Atlas Shrugged* is a very famous and long novel.

It was written by Ayn Rand and published in 1957. Rand called this book her magnum opus, which means her greatest work. The story is a mix of many different things. It includes mystery, romance, and even science fiction.

The book is important because it shares Rand's big ideas. These ideas are part of a system called Objectivism. She writes about things like reason and individual rights. She also writes about how people should be free to work.

The story happens in a dark version of the United States.

In this world, the country is facing a hard time. There are many shortages and businesses are failing. The government makes many new and heavy rules. These rules make it very hard for companies to succeed. A woman named Dagny Taggart tries to run a railroad. She works with a man named Hank Rearden. He creates a new metal that is very strong. They both fight to keep their work going.

Many smart and productive people begin to disappear.

People often ask the mysterious question, "Who is John Galt?" This phrase is used when no one has an answer. Dagny and Hank eventually find a secret hiding place. This place is a beautiful, hidden valley called Galt's Gulch. The people there are on a special kind of strike. They are the "men of the mind" who create new things. They stop working for the government to protest the unfair rules. They want to build a new kind of society.

Rand began writing the first draft in September 1946.

It was a very big job that took many years. She worked on the book full-time for a long time. One part of the book was very hard to write. She spent over two years on a long speech for John Galt. She finally finished that speech on October 13, 1955. The book was finally ready for publishers by November 1956. It was the last big fiction work she ever finished.

Even though some critics did not like the book, it stayed popular.

Many people still buy and read it today. It has influenced many famous thinkers and politicians. Rand did a lot of research to make the story feel real. She studied how railroads and steel plants work. She even talked to scientists like J. Robert Oppenheimer. She used these real details to build her fictional world. This helped make her story feel very big and important.
