Putnam's Sons published it as a book on November 5, 1959. The story is set about 700 years in the future. It tells the story of a group called the Terran Federation. This government is ruled by a military elite. In this world, people must complete Federal Service to earn the right to vote.

The story follows a young man named Juan "Johnny" Rico. Rico is of Filipino descent and comes from a wealthy family. He joins the Mobile Infantry to serve his society. The book shows his journey from a new recruit to an officer. Along the way, Rico attends classes about history and moral philosophy. These lessons help explain how his future society works. The training is very hard and demanding for the soldiers. Rico even learns to fight using powered armor.

This idea of wearing metal suits became very popular in later books and films.

During his service, Rico fights in a huge interstellar war. The humans are fighting against an alien species known as Arachnids. Many people also call these aliens "Bugs." The Bugs come from a planet named Klendathu. They live in groups like ants or termites. They have different roles, such as workers, warriors, and queens. The warriors are the ones that fight in battle. There is also another alien group in the story called the Skinnies. At first, the Skinnies are allies with the Bugs. Later in the story, they switch sides to help the humans.

Heinlein wrote this book in just a few weeks. He was inspired by the political events of the Cold War era. He felt strongly about the United States suspending nuclear tests. He even created a group called the Patrick Henry League to support nuclear testing. Heinlein's own time in the US Navy influenced his writing. He wanted to use the novel to explain his own political views. Because of this, the book became very controversial. Some reviewers thought the book was like propaganda for the military. Others argued that it was just exploring new ideas about voting.

Even though people disagreed about its politics, the book had a huge impact. It helped shape how science fiction writers talk about the military. Some writers even wrote books as a reaction to Heinlein's ideas. For example, Joe Haldeman wrote The Forever War in 1974. The book was also made into a movie in 1997.
