It is a type of story called dystopian fiction. This means it shows a world where things have gone wrong. The book was written by an English writer named George Orwell. He finished his final book in 1949. It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg. The story explores big ideas like how leaders control people. It also looks at how truth and facts can be changed. People still read it today to think about freedom.

In the story, a group called the Party rules everything. They rule a place called Oceania. Great Britain is now just a part of Oceania called Airstrip One. The Party uses a leader named Big Brother to keep control.

People feel like they are always being watched. The Party uses telescreens, which are two-way televisions, to see people. They also use cameras and hidden microphones to listen. There is even a group called the Thought Police. They look for anyone who has ideas that go against the Party. Even thinking the wrong way is called a thoughtcrime.

The main character is a man named Winston Smith. He is 39 years old and works at the Ministry of Truth. His job is to rewrite old news stories and history. He wants the records to match what the Party says is true. When he finds old papers that disagree, he drops them into memory holes. These are ducts that lead to a huge furnace. Winston secretly hates the Party and wants to rebel. He meets a woman named Julia, and they have a secret affair. They meet in a room above an antique shop owned by Mr. Charrington.

Things go wrong for Winston and Julia in the end. They are caught by the Thought Police. Mr. Charrington was actually an undercover agent. Winston is taken to the Ministry of Love. There, a man named O'Brien uses torture to change Winston's mind. Winston is even taken to Room 101. This room contains a person's worst fear, which for Winston is rats. In the end, Winston gives up his feelings for Julia. He stops fighting the Party and says he loves Big Brother. The story shows how hard it is to keep your own thoughts.

This book has changed the way we speak today. Many words from the story are used in real life. For example, people use the term "Orwellian" to describe things that feel like the book. They also use names like "Big Brother" or "Newspeak." Newspeak is a special language the Party uses to limit how people think. The book is considered a classic by many groups. Time magazine put it on a list of 100 best English novels. The Modern Library also put it on their list of 100 Best Novels. It even reached number 6 on the readers' list.
