Cloud Atlas is a famous novel written by the British author David Mitchell.

Published in 2004, this book is a very special kind of storytelling. It uses a style called metafiction, which means it is a story about stories. The book is made of six different tales that are nested inside each other. Imagine a set of dolls where one sits inside another. In this book, one character finds or reads the story of the next person. These tales travel through a huge amount of time. They move from the 19th century to a very distant future.

The way the stories work is like a complex puzzle. Each of the first five stories is interrupted at a very important moment. After the sixth story is told, the other stories are finished in reverse order. This means the reader sees the end of the journey before the beginning. The first story follows Adam Ewing in the mid-1800s on the Chatham Islands. Then, the story moves to a musician named Robert Frobisher in 1931. Next, a journalist named Luisa Rey explores a mystery in 1975. After that, a publisher named Timothy Cavendish faces trouble in the 21st century. The stories then move into a future with clones and a post-apocalyptic world.

David Mitchell used many different ideas to build this world. He combined historical fiction with science fiction and contemporary fiction. The title of the book comes from a piece of music. This music was written by a Japanese composer named Toshi Ichiyanagi. Mitchell said the title refers to two different things. A "cloud" represents things that change. An "atlas" represents things that stay the same. He wanted to show how human nature stays the same across time. He also used real people for inspiration. For example, the characters Frobisher and Ayrs were inspired by real musicians.

This book has received many honors from readers and experts. It won the British Book Awards for Literary Fiction in 2005. It also won the Richard & Judy Book of the Year award. The novel was shortlisted for several big prizes. These include the Booker Prize and the Nebula Award for Best Novel. It was also a nominee for the Arthur C. Clarke Award. Some critics have called the writing "virtuosic" or "brilliant." In 2019, a famous list called The Guardian named it one of the 100 best books of the 21st century. Even Bill Gates included it on his summer reading list in 2020.

Many people enjoy how the book connects different lives. It shows how one person's actions can reach far into the future. A movie was even made from the book in 2012. This film was directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer. It used a large cast of actors to bring the characters to life. Readers often feel like they are solving a mystery while they read. The book asks us to look at how we all fit together. It is a story about how humans change and how they stay the same.
