Objectivism is a system of philosophy created by Ayn Rand. She was a Russian-American writer and thinker. Rand first shared these ideas through her fiction. Her most famous novels are The Fountainhead, written in 1943, and Atlas Shrugged, from 1957.

She later wrote many non-fiction books to explain her views. These included The Virtue of Selfishness and Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology. A philosopher named Leonard Peikoff later helped give the system a formal structure. He calls it a closed system because the main principles were set by Rand. However, he says people can still find new ways to apply these ideas. This philosophy is meant to be a guide for living on earth.

At its heart, Objectivism is about how we know what is real. It starts with three main ideas called axioms. These are statements that are the base of all knowledge. The first axiom is existence, which means "existence exists." The second is consciousness, which is the ability to perceive what exists. The third is identity, which means every thing has a specific nature.

For example, a leaf cannot be red and green at the same time. This is often called the law of identity. Objectivism says the mind does not create reality. Instead, the mind is a tool used to discover reality. This means reality is independent of what we think about it.

To learn about the world, Objectivism relies on reason. Reason is the faculty that connects what our senses perceive. People use their senses, like sight and touch, to gather information. This information is then used through a process called concept formation. This involves using logic to turn observations into ideas. For instance, a person can form the concept of a "dog" by looking at many different dogs. They use a method called measurement omission to group these things together. This means they focus on what is important and leave out some details. This way, people can build a hierarchy of ideas, moving from simple to complex.

Objectivism also has specific ideas about how people should live. Rand believed that the proper moral purpose of life is to pursue one's own happiness. She saw productive achievement as a very noble activity. In terms of society, she believed in a system that respects individual rights. This system is known as laissez-faire capitalism.

The philosophy also looks at the role of art. It suggests that art transforms ideas into a physical form that people can feel. This allows humans to respond to metaphysical ideas through emotion. While Rand saw emotions as a result of ideas, she did not think they were tools for gaining knowledge.

Today, Objectivism continues to be an influential way of thinking. It has a strong following among American conservatives and right-libertarians. The Objectivist movement works to spread these ideas to the public. Even though many academic philosophers have ignored or rejected her work, the ideas remain persistent. It is a system that asks people to look closely at the world around them. By using reason and observing reality, followers aim to live meaningful lives. They seek to define both human nature and the world we inhabit. This makes Objectivism a unique way to study existence and life.
