Astronautics is the study of sending spacecraft into outer space.

This field goes beyond Earth's atmosphere. It is part of a larger area called space science. Some people also use the word aerospace. This word covers both space travel and flight within our air. Astronautics helps us reach far places. It is a very important way to explore our universe.

Working in space is a hard job for engineers. Space has a high-grade vacuum, which means there is no air. There is also radiation that hits objects in space.

Satellites must survive huge changes in temperature. Launch vehicles must also withstand titanic forces. Engineers must save mass to help a ship. Saving mass lets the ship carry more payload. A payload is the useful tools or cargo a ship carries.

Many thinkers helped start this field. Isaac Newton wrote about the math for space in 1687. Later, Leonhard Euler and Joseph Louis Lagrange helped too.

In the early 1900s, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky found a rocket equation. This math helps find a rocket's final velocity. Robert H. Goddard worked on liquid-propellant rockets in the 1920s. These engines became parts of famous rockets like the Saturn V. These ideas turned math into real space travel.

Special groups of scientists study different parts of space. One group studies astrodynamics, which is how things move in orbit.

Another group studies spacecraft propulsion. This is how engines move a ship or change its path. They might use chemical, nuclear, or electric power. Some experts focus on spacecraft design. They combine many small parts into one big machine. Others study controls to keep a rocket in the right spot.

Astronautics connects to many things we see today. We can think of it like aeronautics, which is the study of flight.

The two fields overlap in many ways. We use these tools to send satellites into orbit. This helps us study the stars and the Earth. It is a way to turn big dreams into real machines. Space travel is a huge part of our modern world.
