Aerospace engineering is the field used to build aircraft and spacecraft.

It has two main branches that overlap. Aeronautical engineering focuses on vehicles that fly in our air. Astronautical engineering focuses on vehicles that travel into outer space. People often call this work "rocket science." This term is common in everyday speech. It is used to describe tasks that are very hard.

Building these vehicles is a very big job. Engineers must work in teams to solve many problems. They study aerodynamics to see how air moves around wings. They also use propulsion to find ways to move through the air or space. Some engineers focus on avionics, which are the electronic systems on board. Others study materials science to find the best parts to build with. They must make sure the craft is strong but also lightweight.

This field has a long and exciting history. Sir George Cayley was a pioneer in the 1800s. He was the first to separate the forces of lift and drag. In 1903, the Wright brothers flew the first powered aircraft. Their flight at Kitty Hawk lasted only 12 seconds. Later, Robert Goddard worked on rocket designs in 1914. He used patents for rockets with liquid and solid fuel.

Many famous machines have changed how we travel. The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the first jet engine plane in 1944. In 1958, the term "aerospace" was first used to describe air and space as one realm. NASA was founded in 1958 to help with space research. The Apollo 11 mission landed humans on the Moon in 1969. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon. Michael Collins stayed in orbit during that mission.

We see the results of this work every day. The Boeing 747 began flying in 1970. It was called the "Jumbo Jet" because it held 480 passengers. The Concorde was a supersonic plane that flew in 1976. The Airbus A380 is another huge plane used for travel. It can hold up to 853 people. These machines show how far engineering has come. It connects our world to the sky and beyond.
