Anonymity

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Anonymity is when a person's identity is unknown. This can happen by accident. It can also happen on purpose.

People choose to stay hidden for many reasons. Some people give money to charity without using their names. They may do this to be modest. Others want to stay safe. A witness to a crime might call for help without giving a name. This helps them avoid trouble.

Sometimes people use a pseudonym. This is a fake name used for a long time. A writer might use a pen name. A student might use a student number. These help people build a reputation without sharing private details.

Anonymity can also be used for privacy. In many places, voting is done in secret. This protects the choice of each person. However, some rules require people to show their names. For example, police may ask for a name in some states.

In court, people often use the name "John Doe" if they must stay hidden. This helps protect their identity during a case.
