A Roman leader named Tacitus wrote them. He was also a senator in Rome. His work is very important to us today. It helps us understand the Roman Empire. It tells the story of the first century AD. Many people think it is his best work.

Historians call it a great peak of Roman writing.

Tacitus wrote about how the empire was run. He started his story in AD 14. This was when Augustus Caesar died. He then wrote about the leader Tiberius. The books follow the empire year by year. This is why we call them "Annals." He used official records from the Roman senate. These records are called Acta Senatus. Using these files helped him tell a true story. He wanted to show how the government worked.

Writing these books was a big job. Tacitus wrote at least 16 books for the Annals. He also wrote another set called the Histories. Together, these two works made 30 books. We do not have all of them now. Only about half of the books survived. Some parts are missing from the middle. For example, books 7 through 10 are gone. We also lost parts of books 5 and 6. The story ends in the middle of AD 66.

The books cover many famous leaders. They tell about the reigns of Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius. They also cover the time of Nero. Tacitus shows us both good and bad sides. He says Augustus brought peace to Rome. But he also shows the dark side of life. He describes some leaders as tyrants. He thought they caused fear in the people. He wrote about many wars and big fires. One major event was the Great Fire of Rome.

A man named Arcimboldi found those in 1508. Even though they are old, people still talk about them. You might even see them in modern stories. Some authors mention people reading Tacitus in books. His work connects the ancient past to our world today.
