I, Claudius is a famous historical novel by Robert Graves. It was first published in 1934. The book is written as an autobiography. This means the main character tells his own life story. The story follows the Julio-Claudian dynasty, which was Rome's first ruling family. It covers many years of history in the Roman Empire.

The book works by using a first-person narrative. This means Claudius tells the reader what he sees and feels. He describes the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius, and Caligula. Most of these events come from real Roman historians. Graves used the writings of Suetonius and Tacitus to find his facts. He even said Claudius appeared to him in a dream! This helped him turn old history into a living story.

Robert Graves wrote this book for a very specific reason. He needed to pay off a debt of £4,000. He had lost money in a bad land deal. The book was a huge success for him. He actually earned £8,000 in just six months. This money helped him fix his difficult financial situation. Writing this story changed his life forever.

There are many interesting details in the story. Claudius was the fourth Emperor of Rome. He ruled from AD 41 to AD 54. In the book, he is a smart man with a limp and a stammer. His family thinks he is a harmless fool. This mistake helps him survive a very dangerous family. He uses his knowledge of history to stay safe.

This book is very important in the world of literature. In 1998, the Modern Library named it a great book. It was fourteenth on their list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Time magazine also chose it as one of the 100 best novels. It was even made into a famous BBC television series in 1976. Many people still love this story today.
