I, Claudius is a famous book by Robert Graves. He wrote it in 1934. The book is a historical novel. It is written as an autobiography. This means the main character tells his own story. He is Claudius, a leader of Rome.

The story follows the first ruling family of Rome. This family is called the Julio-Claudian dynasty. The book covers many years of history. It starts when Julius Caesar is killed. It ends when the leader Caligula is killed. Most of the events come from real Roman historians. Graves used their old writings to make the story feel real.

In the book, Claudius is a very smart man. But his family thinks he is a fool. He has a limp and a stammer. Because of this, his relatives do not see him as a threat. This helps him stay safe in a dangerous family. He uses his wits to survive. The book was so good that it became a TV show. Many people call it one of the best books ever written.
