The Julio-Claudian dynasty was a group of five Roman emperors.

This family ruled the Roman Empire for many years. Their rule began with Augustus in 27 BC. It ended when Nero died in AD 68. The name comes from two different family lines. These were the Julii and the Claudii. These families were joined through marriage and adoption. This helped them keep power in a single line.

Most of these emperors did not have their own biological sons. To solve this problem, they used a tool called adoption. In Rome, an aristocrat could adopt an heir. This heir would take the family name of the person who adopted him. Augustus was an adopted son of Julius Caesar. He later adopted his stepson, Tiberius, to be his successor. Tiberius then had to adopt his nephew, Germanicus. This way, the family could choose who would lead next.

Augustus was the first emperor of this group. He was very important to the start of the empire. He had many family members who died young. For example, his grandsons Gaius and Lucius died in AD 4 and AD 2. Because of these deaths, he had to name Tiberius as his heir. Tiberius ruled for 23 years starting in AD 14. He was a Claudian by birth but became a Julian through adoption. He died in AD 37 at the age of 78.

Caligula was the third emperor in this line. He was the son of Germanicus. Because of his parents, he was the first true "Julio-Claudian" emperor. He had blood ties to both the Julian and Claudian families. After Caligula, the emperor Claudius took the throne. Claudius was the brother of Germanicus. He was also a great-nephew of Augustus. He added the name Caesar to his own name when he became leader. He eventually adopted his stepson, Nero, to be his heir.

Nero was the fifth and final emperor of the dynasty. He was a great-great-grandson of Augustus. He became emperor in AD 54. Nero's rule ended when he committed suicide in AD 68. This event ended the direct line of Augustus. After a short civil war, a new group called the Flavians took over. The Julio-Claudian era was a time of big changes for Rome. It showed how families used laws to keep their power for a long time.
