Nerva–Antonine dynasty

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Nerva–Antonine dynasty was a group of seven Roman leaders. They ruled the Roman Empire from 96 AD to 192 AD. This period is very important in history. The first five rulers are often called the "Five Good Emperors." These men were known for being wise and kind. They helped the empire stay strong for many years.

Most of these emperors did not have a son to take over. To solve this, they used a special way called adoption. Adoption is a legal way to make a new family member. In Rome, adoption was as strong as being born into a family. The emperor would pick a person he liked to be his heir. An heir is the person who becomes the next leader. This helped ensure that a good leader always followed a good leader.

This way of picking leaders started with Nerva in 96 AD. Nerva was the first emperor of this group. He adopted a popular military leader named Trajan. Trajan ruled from 98 AD to 117 AD. After Trajan, the emperor Hadrian took over. Hadrian said he was adopted by Trajan on his deathbed. This kept the line of leaders moving forward smoothly.

There were many specific names and dates in this dynasty. Hadrian ruled until 138 AD and named Antoninus Pius as his heir. Antoninus Pius ruled from 138 AD to 161 AD. He was a peaceful leader who followed Roman traditions. Then, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus ruled together starting in 161 AD. Verus died in 169 AD, so Marcus Aurelius ruled alone until 180 AD.

The dynasty changed when Marcus Aurelius chose his real son. His son was named Commodus, and he ruled from 177 AD to 192 AD. Many people thought choosing a son was an unfortunate choice. They believed it marked the start of the empire's decline. The dynasty finally ended when Commodus was murdered in 192 AD. After that, Rome went through a hard time called the Year of the Five Emperors.
